Ilion Miss Shirley Hoeschele was born on February 7, 1925 in Utica, N.Y. daughter of the late Henry and Nell O'Hare Hoeschele. She was educated in Annunciation School in Ilion, N.Y. and graduated from Ilion High School in 1942. Shirley graduated from State University of N.Y. (SUNY) at Fredonia with a B.S. in Music and from SUNY Potsdam with a Master's Degree in Education. She retired from SUNY Potsdam as an Associate Professor of Education in 1989. She taught in Ilion, Scotia, Manchester, Utica and Clayton N.Y, and Colorado Springs, CO. . Shirley had a great devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, as represented by the hundreds of Rosaries she made that were donated all over the world. She loved to knit and was very active in the knitting program at Catholic Charities. Shirley was also active in the N.Y. State Retired Teachers Association and was a past member of the Ilion School board. She took great pride in her work with the children in Remington School of Ilion, teaching several reading classes. Shirley is survived by one sister, Carolyn Normile, Buffalo, N.Y. as well as eighteen nieces and nephews, several grandnieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her sister Agatha Sokol, Seattle, WA and her brother Leo Hoeschele, Rochester, N.Y. She will be greatly missed by all her relatives, friends, caregivers, church families and charitable groups. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 9:00 AM, from Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, Frankfort. Interment will be private at Mt. Oliviet Cemetery, Whitesboro.
