Susan Kelly-Selby

Ilion-Utica Susan Kelly-Selby, 67, "Susie," passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 after a lifelong and courageous fight with systemic lupus and congestive heart failure, among many other illnesses. Susan's never-quit spirit inspired everyone who knew her. Even when she felt her worst, Susan never let her health get in the way of supporting and encouraging the people she loved. Susan was born May 20, 1951 in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of the late Robert E. and Margaret (Lynch) Kelly. She attended secondary and nursing school in Rochester, NY, where she met the love of her life and best friend. On September 17, 1976, she was united in marriage with Cary Selby in Pittsford, NY. Susan is survived by her loving husband of over 42 years Cary, and her two daughters Brooke (Dan) Keese of Loudonville, and Chelsea (John) Scaramuzzino of Utica. While Susan couldn't have been more proud of her daughters, in recent years, the light of her life was being "Nana" to her two grandchildren, Eloise and Jack, both 3. She is also survived by her beloved sister Jacqueline (Anthony) Cesario of Girard, PA, and many dear nieces and nephews. Susan worked as an RN in the fields of psychiatric nursing (which she forever teased prepared her for marriage), school nursing, and community health, but her most prized and accomplished role was being a mother. Susan will be remembered for her positive spirit and sense of humor that stayed with her through her many obstacles. It is no surprise that Susan's favorite word was "hope." She remained hopeful and endlessly grateful for the wonderful years and memories made with her loving family and loyal friends. Susan valued her Irish heritage and treasured her knack for making others laugh. Susan was committed to her community, often volunteering her time over many years. Above all, with her larger-than-life personality, she never ceased to share the pride and love she had for her family with her those around her. Services will be 6:00 PM Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc., 100 Otsego St., Ilion, with Deacon James Bower officiating. Friends may call Friday from 3:00 PM until the time of the service. Family and friends are invited to gather for a luncheon on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 11:00 AM at the Ilion Elks #1444, 8 West St., Ilion to celebrate Susan's well-lived and well-loved life.
