Ilion
Dr. Raymond H. Russell, 86, formerly of 28 John St. in Ilion, passed away on Monday April 25, 2011 at Baptist Health Care in Scotia, NY.
Ray was born on October 14, 1924 in Ilion the son of the late Homer and Marie (Wagner) Russell. He was educated in Ilion, Union College and graduated with a Doctorate in Dentistry from Columbia University. He practiced in Ilion until his retirement in 1998. Ray loved his patients and his work, he was always available for anyone day or night.
Ray married the former Willma (Billy) Simmons in Westport, Connecticut on November 29, 1947. He also served in the US Air Force from 1949 - 51.
Ray loved spending his summers at his family camp, Ledgewood on Piseco Lake, which he built in 1965. The camp was a great source of joy for himself and his family. Ray was a member of The Church of Annunciation in Ilion and served on the Ilion Planning Commission. He was an active member of the NYS Dental Society. He spent many years as a member of the Ilion Little Theater. Ray was a great tinkerer and loved his hobbies of carpentry, photography, and computers.
Ray is survived by his loving wife Willma; his daughter Sharon (Steve) Peelor of Norman, OK, Dr. Michael Russell of Newberryport, MA; Pamela of Schenectady, NY and Stephen (Cynthia) of Schenectady; and Chip (Andrew Sekera) of Randalph, MA; his loving niece Susan(Jeff) Paine of South Lima NY; and his loving sister in-law Sylvina Simmons of Ilion, NY. His grandchildren; Christopher, William, Stephen, Mathew, Theresa, Dana, Victoria, and Evan. His great grandchildren; Dempsey, Hayden, Mason, Larkin, and Alaina. His great nieces; Colleen, Teresa, and Margi, and his dog "Ginger." He was predeceased by a sister Jean McKenna and his nephew Joseph McKenna.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday April 29, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Annunciation Church in Ilion, with the Rev. Leo Potvin officiating and Deacon James Bower assisting. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 6-8 pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Community Hospice of Schenectady 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308. Envelopes will be available at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home.

The Whiter Funeral Company was started in 1893 by H.A. Whiter and was originally located in Forestport, NY. Following a fire in Forestport, the family relocated in Ilion, and reopened the funeral home in the early 1900's.
