Ilion
Robert Carter, Jr., 90, of 95 N. Fifth Ave., Ilion, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010, in Massachusetts with his family who deeply loved him. He was born in Ilion on August 16, 1920, the son of Robert and Lywena (Hughes) Carter. Robert graduated from Ilion High School in 1939 and served in the US Navy during World War II, on the USS Eastland. During his service he was involved with several notable amphibious landings and battles including the Philippines and Okinawa and a visit to Tian Xin, China, courtesy of the US Navy. Bob was employed for 44 years as a toolmaker with the Remington Arms Co., Ilion, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ilion.
Robert was married to Evelyn (Foster) who preceded him in 2005. Survivors include his sons Stephen and Glenn and their wives Patrice (Meehan) and Hallie, his grandchildren Andrew and his wife Melissa, Benjamin and Katherine Carter as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers Glenn and Jack. He enjoyed bowling, skeet shooting, tennis, golf, reading newspapers and was a wealth of knowledge in particular with respect to geography and history. Bob was a warm and witty man who loved his family and friends, dogs, old cars and baseball. He loved going to lunch and dinner with friends and family. He also loved his home town Ilion which held a special place in his heart. He was a great man and he will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, September 26 from 4-6 pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Otsego St., Ilion. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, September 27, from the funeral home, with Rev. Victor McKusick officiating. Interment will be in the Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion.
As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Envelopes are available at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Ilion.

The Whiter Funeral Company was started in 1893 by H.A. Whiter and was originally located in Forestport, NY. Following a fire in Forestport, the family relocated in Ilion, and reopened the funeral home in the early 1900's.
